Dental Fillings
Tooth Coloured Fillings
Earlier, dental fillings were made of an amalgam of different metals that could not bond with the tooth; they merely capped or rested on the tooth offering protection. Today, dentists are using composite resins and porcelains that are natural looking, metal free, safe and predictable.
When do you need a dental filling?
You need dental fillings when there is decay/caries in the tooth, loss of tooth structure due broken fillings/tooth, wear, trauma, etc. Certain types of fillings/restorations can change the shape, shade and size of the teeth to make it more cosmetically appealing. Research has enabled to develop materials which create stronger and natural looking fillings.
Teeth Restoration
In restorative dentistry, the dentist rebuilds a tooth that not only looks natural but also functions effectively while biting/chewing. Depending on the amount of tooth which need to be rebuild either a composite resin restoration(filling) or a dental crown.
Methods to repair teeth:
There are different methods to repair the teeth with restorative fillings or materials. The choice is based on the specific situation and comes with its benefits and drawbacks. At East Side Dental, we have several options for you and an experienced team waiting to craft that smile.
- Direct Restoration: Fillings consist of small amounts of restorative material placed on the tooth to rebuild the amount of tooth lost due to decay or fracture. The dentist applies the resin in layers, sets it instantly with special light that allow the filling to be ready for function immediately.
- Indirect Restoration: This is used when the restoration of the tooth is complex. When there are not enough healthy teeth left to fill, the dentist will shape the tooth, scan the tooth and use computer assisted design and milling to create restorations or crowns to make harder, more durable porcelain restoration.
