Why is wisdom tooth removal necessary?
Wisdom teeth are the last molars on each side of the upper and lower jaws and are usually the last teeth that develop in your mouth. They usually erupt late teens or early twenties. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed.
When there isn’t enough room for your wisdom teeth, they can become impacted or partially hidden underneath the surface of the gums.
This leads to dental problems like infection and can damage the tooth in front of it. The best way to avoid damage to your teeth is having your impacted wisdom teeth removed.
An impacted wisdom tooth may:
Grow at an angle towards the second molar
Grow at an angle towards the back of the mouth
Sometimes they grow at a right angle to the other teeth
Or grow straight up but stay trapped within the jawbone
Recommended treatment
The recommended treatment will be removing the wisdom teeth if it is causing pain, inflammation, swelling, bad taste, or damaging adjacent tooth. Your dentist or an oral surgeon does the wisdom tooth removal. The decision to remove your wisdom teeth will be in consultation with the dental surgeon once they examine of your mouth and jaw, and take X-rays to have a look at the positioning of the wisdom teeth.
